Description

(54) LOCKABLE WINDOW OR DOOR FASTENING (71) We, ALBERT MARSTON & BR< COMPANY LIMITED, a British Company of Wellington Works, Planetary Road, Willenhall, WV13 3ST, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a window or door fastening of the kind having an operating member such as a handle or stay which is movable relative to an associated fitting which may be a mounting for the operating member or a keeper with which the operating member releasably engages, as for example in the case of a casement stay. Such a fastening is hereinafter referred to as "of the kind described".
It is becoming increasingly desirable that the operating member of a fastening of the kind described should be lockable against movement at least when it is in a closed position so as to prevent the window or door to which the fastening is applied from being opened by children or unauthorised persons.
It is the principal object of the present invention to provide a fastening which meets this requirement.
The present invention consists in a window or door fastening of the kind described which is lockable. wherein the operating member and the fitting have surfaces which closely confront when the operating member is in a position at which it is desired to lock that member against movement relative to the fitting, one of said surfaces having associated therewith a locking member threadedly engaged with a screw thread on the component having that surface and rotatable by means of a key. through an access hole in one of the components. to be moved axially between inoperative and operative positions in which it respectively does not and does project from the surface, and the other of said surfaces having a socket adapted to be engaged by the locking member when that member is in the operative position. the engagement preventing the operating member from moving relative to the fitting, and the locking member being concealed during its engagement with the socket.
Where the operating member is angularly movable the locking member and socket are spaced from the turning axis of the operating member.
Convenientlv the locking member is associated with the surface on the fitting and the access hole for the key is in the operating member and extends into the socket.
The locking member may be in the form of a headless screw having a kerf or noncircular socket in one end for engagement bv a complementally shaped end of the key.
The screw thread with which the locking member engages may be formed directly in the one component or it may be in a nut or like element rigidly secured to the component.
A casement window fastening embodying the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I is a front view of the fastening in a released position: Figure 2 is a front view of the fastening in a closed position: and Figures 3 and 4 are fragmentary sections on line X-X of Figure 2 showing a handle of the fastening respectively locked and unlocked.
The fastening comprises an angularly movable lever handle l and a mounting plate 2 to which the handle is pivotally connected by a pin 3 extending perpendicu larlv to a flat front surface 4 of the mounting plate. In use the fastening is mounted on the casement and the handle l wedgingly en gages in known manner at a bearing surface 5 with a lug on a bracket, no shown, secured to the main window frame to hold the casement in the closed position.
Spaced from the pivotal axis of the handle 1, the mounting plate 2 carries a locking member 6 which is in the form of a headless screw with a hexagonal socket 7 in its outer end. The locking member 6 is screwed into, and can be fully received into, a nut 8 which is driven into and rigidly retained by friction in a hole drilled in the mounting plate. The mouth of the nut 8 is flush with the flat front surface 4 of the mounting plate 2.
A head portion 9 of the handle 1 at which the handle is pivoted by the pin 3 to the mounting plate, has a flat rear surface 10 substantially flush with the flat front surface 4 of the mounting plate. Into that rear surface 10 a plain bore hole is drilled which provides a socket 11 for the locking member 6, the socket being positioned so that it is co-axial with the locking member when the handle is in its closed position. Another hole 12 of smaller diameter than the socket 11 enters co-axially into the socket from the front of the head portion 9. This latter hole constitutes an access hole for a key 13, Figure 3, for turning the locking member when the handle is in the closed position.
The access hole 12 is appreciably larger than its diameter, and is longer than the socket 11. In one practical example of the fastening the access hole has a diameter of only 4 m.m.
The key 13 has a shank 14 of hexagonal cross-section complementary to the hexagonal socket 7 in the locking member 6.
The access hole 12 is of diameter just sufficiently large enough to permit the shank 14 to be inserted into the hole.
When the handle is in the closed position, as shown in Figure 2. it can be locked against being turned by screwing the locking member 5 out from the nut 8 and into the socket 11, Figure 3. by means of the key inserted through the access hole 12. As the socket is shorter than the locking member, the locking member maintains its engaged ment with the nut even when it fullv occupies the socket. The locking member 6 and its engagement with the socket are concealed by the access hole and by the flush relationship of the surfaces 4. 10. of the mounting plate and the head portion 9 of the handle which contain the locking member and socket.
When the locking member is not in use it is screwed fully into the nut 8, Figure 4. so that it does not project from the mounting plate and interfere with the turning of the handle.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the invention affords the facilitv for being locked to the fastening in a neat and inexpensive manner.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A window or door fastening of the kind described which is lockable, wherein the operating member and the fitting have surfaces which closely confront when the operating member is in a position at which it is desired to lock that member against movement relative to the fitting, one of said surfaces having associated therewith a locking member threadedly engaged with a screw thread on the component having that surface and rotatable by means of a key, through an access hole in one of the components, to be moved axially between inoperative and operative positions in which it respectively does not and does project from the surface. and the other of said surfaces having a socket adapted to be engaged by the locking member when that member is in the operative position, the engagement preventing the operating member from moving relative to the fitting, and the locking member being concealed during its engagement with the socket.
2. A fastening acccording to Claim 1 wherein the locking member is associated with the surface on the fitting.
3. A fastening according to Claim 2 wherein the access hole for the key is in the operating member and extends into the socket.
4. A fastening according to any preceding claim wherein the locking member is a headless screw having a kerf or non-circular socket in one end for engagement by a complementally shaped end of the key.
5. A fastening according to any preceding claim wherein the screw thread with which the locking member engages is in a nut or like element rigidly secured to the component carrying the locking member.
6. A fastening according to Claim 1 wherein the operating member is a lever handle pivoted to the fitting for angular movement about an axis perpendicular to said confronting surfaces. said confronting surfaces are respectively at the front of the fitting and the rear of the handle, the locking member is associated with the surface of the fitting and the socket is in the handle. and the access hole for the key is in the handle and extends co-axiallv into the socket from the front of the handle.
7. A casement window fastening sub stantiallv as described herein with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.

Claims (7)

**WARNING** start of CLMS field may overlap end of DESC **. gages in known manner at a bearing surface 5 with a lug on a bracket, no shown, secured to the main window frame to hold the casement in the closed position. Spaced from the pivotal axis of the handle 1, the mounting plate 2 carries a locking member 6 which is in the form of a headless screw with a hexagonal socket 7 in its outer end. The locking member 6 is screwed into, and can be fully received into, a nut 8 which is driven into and rigidly retained by friction in a hole drilled in the mounting plate. The mouth of the nut 8 is flush with the flat front surface 4 of the mounting plate 2. A head portion 9 of the handle 1 at which the handle is pivoted by the pin 3 to the mounting plate, has a flat rear surface 10 substantially flush with the flat front surface 4 of the mounting plate. Into that rear surface 10 a plain bore hole is drilled which provides a socket 11 for the locking member 6, the socket being positioned so that it is co-axial with the locking member when the handle is in its closed position. Another hole 12 of smaller diameter than the socket 11 enters co-axially into the socket from the front of the head portion 9. This latter hole constitutes an access hole for a key 13, Figure 3, for turning the locking member when the handle is in the closed position. The access hole 12 is appreciably larger than its diameter, and is longer than the socket 11. In one practical example of the fastening the access hole has a diameter of only 4 m.m. The key 13 has a shank 14 of hexagonal cross-section complementary to the hexagonal socket 7 in the locking member 6. The access hole 12 is of diameter just sufficiently large enough to permit the shank 14 to be inserted into the hole. When the handle is in the closed position, as shown in Figure 2. it can be locked against being turned by screwing the locking member 5 out from the nut 8 and into the socket 11, Figure 3. by means of the key inserted through the access hole 12. As the socket is shorter than the locking member, the locking member maintains its engaged ment with the nut even when it fullv occupies the socket. The locking member 6 and its engagement with the socket are concealed by the access hole and by the flush relationship of the surfaces 4. 10. of the mounting plate and the head portion 9 of the handle which contain the locking member and socket. When the locking member is not in use it is screwed fully into the nut 8, Figure 4. so that it does not project from the mounting plate and interfere with the turning of the handle. It will be understood from the foregoing that the invention affords the facilitv for being locked to the fastening in a neat and inexpensive manner. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A window or door fastening of the kind described which is lockable, wherein the operating member and the fitting have surfaces which closely confront when the operating member is in a position at which it is desired to lock that member against movement relative to the fitting, one of said surfaces having associated therewith a locking member threadedly engaged with a screw thread on the component having that surface and rotatable by means of a key, through an access hole in one of the components, to be moved axially between inoperative and operative positions in which it respectively does not and does project from the surface. and the other of said surfaces having a socket adapted to be engaged by the locking member when that member is in the operative position, the engagement preventing the operating member from moving relative to the fitting, and the locking member being concealed during its engagement with the socket.
2. A fastening acccording to Claim 1 wherein the locking member is associated with the surface on the fitting.
3. A fastening according to Claim 2 wherein the access hole for the key is in the operating member and extends into the socket.
4. A fastening according to any preceding claim wherein the locking member is a headless screw having a kerf or non-circular socket in one end for engagement by a complementally shaped end of the key.
5. A fastening according to any preceding claim wherein the screw thread with which the locking member engages is in a nut or like element rigidly secured to the component carrying the locking member.
6. A fastening according to Claim 1 wherein the operating member is a lever handle pivoted to the fitting for angular movement about an axis perpendicular to said confronting surfaces. said confronting surfaces are respectively at the front of the fitting and the rear of the handle, the locking member is associated with the surface of the fitting and the socket is in the handle. and the access hole for the key is in the handle and extends co-axiallv into the socket from the front of the handle.
7. A casement window fastening sub stantiallv as described herein with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
