Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO FAIRINGS FOR ANKLE JOINTS (71) We, J. E. HANGER & COMPANY LIMITED. a British Company of Roehampton Lane, Roehampton, London SW15 5PL, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention is concerned with ankle joints for artificial limbs.
For cosmetic purposes, it is desirable to enclose the structural members of the ankle joint with a fairing which has hitherto been formed individually around each joint.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fairing for an ankle joint which can be preformed to accommodate any particular joint structure whilst providing for the external cosmesis to be adapted to a specific patient.
From one aspect. the invention provides a fairing for an ankle joint, comprising a moulded member of relatively soft plastics material provided with recesses to accommodate the structural members of the joint and having an outer surface of shape approximating to the natural shape of an ankle and a sleeve of rigid plastics material enclosing the moulded member and extending upwardly above it to form a cosmetic fairing between the shin and the foot of a user.
From another aspect, an ankle joint in accordance with the invention is enclosed in a preformed moulded member of relatively soft plastics material which in turn is enclosed by a preformed sleeve of more rigid plastics shaped to provide a cosmetic fairing between the shin and the foot of the user.
The invention thus provides for the use of a single-sized assembly of structural members in combination with an external cosmetic fairing adapted to the shape of a particular patient, the pre-moulded plastics member taking up the differences in size or shape of the external cosmetic fairing.
Other parts of the invention are embodied in the preferred form of the invention which will now be described in some detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is an exploded view of an ankle fairing.
As shown, an ankle joint comprises an assembly 1 of structural members joining a tubular shin member 2 to a pivoted T-bolt 3 by which a foot (not shown) can be connected to the joint. The ankle joint 1 is of the kind described in Patent Specification No. 1,494,706, but it will be understood that the invention is applicable to any other type of ankle joint.
The assembly 1 is enclosed in a member 4 which is moulded from a soft plastics material and is provided internally with recesses such as shown at 5,6 into which the structural members fit.
Externally the member 4 is shaped so as to approximate to the natural shape of an ankle. A relatively rigid sleeve 7 forming a cosmetic fairing for the shin engages over the member 4 The lower portion of the sleeve 7 is shaped to fit closely over the outside of the member 4, though it will be appreciated that such a fitting is not critical due to the softness of the member 4 which allows it to compensate for small differences in shape. The upper part of the sleeve 7 may be shaped as necessary to provide an external cosmetic fairing adapted to the size and shape of the patient's shin.
It will be seen that a single standard ankle joint assembly can thus be used with a standard pre-moulded plastics member for a large variety of patients whilst at the same time each patient can be provided individually with a limb cosmetically adapted to his particular requirements by individually tailoring the sleeve.
The moulded member 4 may be of foamed plastics, for example polyurethane.
The sleeve 7 is of a plastics which is relatively rigid but sufficiently flexible to provide an acceptable fairing.

Claims (6)

  1. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
    t. An ankle joint enclosed in a preformed moulded member of relatively soft plastics material which in turn is enclosed by a preformed sleeve of more rigid plastics shaped to provide a cosmetic fairing between the shin and the foot of the user.
  2. 2. An ankle joint comprising an assembly of structural members, a preformed moulded member of soft plastics material fitting around said assembly and a sleeve of rigid plastics material fitting over said moulded member and shaped to provide a cosmetic fairing between the shin and the foot of the user.
  3. 3. A fairing for an ankle joint, comprising a moulded member of relatively soft plastics material provided with recesses to accommodate the structural members of the joint and having an outer surface of shape approximating to the natural shape of an ankle and a sleeve of rigid plastics material enclosing the moulded member and extending upwardly above it to form a cosmetic fairing between the shin and the foot of a user.
  4. 4. An ankle joint according to either of Claims 1 or 2 in which the moulded member is foamed polyurethane.
  5. 5. A fairing for an ankle joint, according to Claim 3 in which the moulded member is of foamed polyurethane.
  6. 6. An ankle joint substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
