Description

(54) A DRIVER'S CAB FOR A COMMERCIAL VEHICLE (71) We, DAIMLER-BENZ AKTIENGE SELLSCHAFT, of Stuttgart-Unterturkheim, Germany, a company organised under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a driver's cab for a commercial vehicle, having seats for a driver and a co-driver and provided with at least a cooking unit and sink included in the installation.
The problem underlying this invention is to construct a driver's cab of this type for a lorry in such a way that, without impairing visibility or operating conditions or the equipment of the driver's seat, it offers the maximum living comfort, such as is aimed at in particular for long-distance travel, to the countries of the Near East for example, when the lorry, occupied only by the driver, may have to act as his living and sleeping quarters for a large part of the journey.
Therefore, with a lorry driver's cab of this type which may also have to accommodate a co-driver on the run, the cooker and sink unit assumes a central role.
According to the invention, there is provided a driver's cab for a vehicle having a driver's and a co-driver's seat and comprising at least a cooking unit and a sink, wherein the cooking unit and the sink are disposed in tandem, in the longitudinal direction of the cab between the driver's seat and the co-driver's seat. This basic arrangement, in which the cooker and sink preferably take the form of a cooker-sink combination unit which can be covered in, not only affords favourable conditions of access to the cooker and/or the sink. but also allows the basic construction of the lorry driver's cab to be retained so that, on the one hand, the characteristics which are important from the driving point of view are retained in full and, on the other hand, an arrangement is produced which is highly advantageous in respect of the utilisation of the driver's cab as a living and sleeping area, since it also allows the other installations to be disposed particularly conveniently.
It has been found particularly convenient, with a cooker and sink combination in accordance with the invention, to provide this unit with a cover which is situated at the level of the top of the fascia of the cab and which consists, preferably, of a cover which, when open, can be rested against the fascia, in particular a hinged cover the axis of rotation of which lies on the front edge - in the driving direction -- of a cupboard supporting the cooker-sink combination. In this arrangement the cover rests with the front edge preferably directly on the fascia and bridges the space between the front edge of the cooker-sink combination and the fascia. In its open position it forms a working surface which preferably lies in one plane with the upper side of the cooker-sink combination. If the cover is constructed as a hinged cover then its inner side constitutes the working surface, thereby making it possible for the outer side of the cover to provide a useful surface especially in the form of a tray which can be used by the driver, when driving, as a receptacle for any objects he wishes to put down. It may also be possible for this depositing area to have a lid, so that it is unnecessary to empty the tray before swinging the cover open.
If, as is preferably the case, the cookersink combination is so disposed as not to be immediately adjacent to the fascia, it has been found advantageous to provide in front of it, preferably in the forward region below the cover in its open position, a storage area which conveniently projects into the area under the fascia. In conformity with the interior space available in a forward control type driver's cab, for which the invention is particularly suitable, this storage area is disposed substantially in front of and below the cooker-sink combination which lies approximately over the leading axle of the vehicle. A construction which has been found suitable for this storage area is one in which the area adjacent to the cookersink combination, is in the form of a bottle holder and in the part ahead of this, over which the fascia engages substantially, it forms a storage area for example for accessories of the vehicle. In this way the space adjacent to the fascia can also be used to tbe full, the part of the box situated in front of the bottle holder constituting preferably a coverabie compartment for emergency equipment.
Especially in conJunction with a construction of the co-driver's seat by which it can be changed, relative to its side elevation, from its normal position level with the cooker-sink combination to a position in which it is substantially close to the fascia and ahead of the cooker-sink combination, it has been found convenient to provide the cooker-sink combination, in the rear portion below the sink, with a sliding comDonent in the form of a drawer which can be pulled out towards the codriver's side. Then, between this drawer and the front end of the cooker-sink combination, there remains substantially below the cooker portion, a compartment which is accessible from the front end and which may, if required, be closable by a hinged flap. Here the hinged flap has its axis of rotation preferably level with the upper side of the box, so that when open it covers the bottle holder storage area. The height of the hinged flap is preferably such that it does not engage over the cover of the box and consequently does not impede access to it. A large-capacity fire extinguisher can be accommodated in this compartment Whereas in the construction according to the invention, the cooker-sink combination is orientated substantially in the foreand-aft direction of the vehicle, a cupboard unit is provided extending transversely over at least the greater part of the width of the driver's cab behind the driver's seat.
This cupboard unit, the surface of which lies preferably in the same plane as the top of the cooker-sink combination, conveniently forms a base for a sleeping berth, the width of which may be greater than the depth of the cupboard unit measured in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, so that in the sleeping position it partly overlaps the rear portion of the cooker-sink combination. The bed can be prevented from slipping forwards by means according to one aspect of the invention, by which the cover associated with the cooker-sink combination is provided in its closed position with a tray on its top, the back of which can form a stop for the bed. The tray may be provided with a cover, for example a clipon cover or a roller-blind type cover, so that it does not have to be emptied before the hinged cover is opened.
As regards the sleeping berth in its reclining position, the tray acts as a kind of bedside table on which personal articles can be laid ready to hand without getting in the way if the vehicle has to start off immediately.
The transverse cupboard unit preferably comprises a cupboard holding at least one water supply tank. The water tank or tanks are here preferably bucket-type inserts to fit the cupboard, which are provided with a filling and drawing-off opening at the top which can be closed off and into which it is further possible in a convenient way to insert a suction connection in the form of a submersible pump.
The cupboard containing the water tanks is preferably provided with insulation surrounding the tanks at least so that the water supply for one day can be stored at an approximately constant temperature independently of the temperature of the environment. Access to the water tanks is conveniently obtained by way of a flap which closes the top of the cupboard and the rear swivelling edge of which lies at a distance in front of the rear edge of the cupboard. The cupboard containing the water tanks is conveniently located behind the co-driver's seat so that when the latter is tipped forward the relatively heavy tanks can be inserted easily and also so that during work at the sink or cooker the connections on the water tanks can be changed if necessary without difficulty.
Furthermore if a refrigerator box, accessible from above, is provided within the cupboard unit in the area behind the cooker-sink combination as part of the cupboard unit, then according to the invention the part of the cupboard which contains, or - constitutes the refrigerator box. the cupboard containing the water tanks, and the cooker-sink combination form a self-contained and readilly accessible working area which is grouped round the co-driver's seat.
In accordance with a further asDect of the invention, it may be advisable to provide, between the cupboard containing the water tanks and the refrigerator box.
a further cupboard section located immediately behind the cooker-sink combination, thus producing a certain lateral offsetting of the refrigerator box, this cupboard section preferably being used for articles not needed during work at the cooker and sink. In particular, this cupboard may act as a location for a safe. Because there is no need for any access to this cupboard, which is also preferably covered by a flap, during washing-up and cooking operations a further working surface becomes available, which is convenient, especially in this working area.
The cupboard unit further comprises, behind the driver's seat, a clothes chest which is preferably in the form of a trunklike upper part of a cupboard, the lower part of which becomes accessible when the upper part, formed by the clothes chest, is swung or tipped up. In this way, on the one hand a relatively large storage space is obtained for articles of clothing such as shirts, underwear, socks and the like. while while on the other hand it becomes possible to stow important tools and spare parts without the risk of soiling the articles of clothing, while a compartment is also provided in this lower cupboard which takes the form of a spare parts cupboard, preferably at the side and on the outside, for a hydraulic jack and for a gas cylinder for the cooker, so that these two heavy items lie ready to hand.
The trunk-like upper part of the cupboard is again conveniently accessible by way of an upper flap of which the axis of rotation is situated at a distance in front of the rear edge of the cupboard unit. This flap can preferably be closed in a dust-tight manner by means of rubber packing cords or the like. As a result of this arrangement of the cover flaps of the cupboards of the cupboard unit it becomes possible to dispose the bed, in its transport position, upright adiacent to the rear edge of the cupboard unit and supported on the latter ,its other longitudinal edge conveniently engaging behind an upper cupboard which may be in one or more parts which is disposed on the roof of the cab at a distance in front of the rear wall of the driver's cab.
In this arrangement the upper cupboard preferably extends over the whole width of the driver's cab and lies with its front edge approximately in the region of the front edge of the cupboard unit running in the transverse direction, being accessible by way of flans provided on the front and capable of being swung downwardly. This arrangement and mounting of the bed in its transport position permits a rapid change over between its transport position and the reclining position.
In relation to a skvlight in the roof of the driver's cab, in the opening of which an air-conditioning plant may be installed if required, the upper cupboard is located with its front edge substantially adjacent to the rear of said skylight, so that the air intake and outlet space is not impeded by the upper cupboard. With the arrangement of the cooker-sink combination ac- cording to the invention the skylight opening lies substantially directly above it, so that it can act simultaneously as a fume extractor if necessary.
Especially when their is an air-conditioning plant in the skylight opening it is advantageous, for extracting cooking fumes, to employ at least one of the ventilation openings on the cab fascia as an air outlet and suction may be effected by means of the associated ventilation blower which is operated for suction by reversal of polarity giving the opposite direction of rotation.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in greater detail and by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in which : - Figure 1 is a side elevation of a forward control driver's eab of a lorry, the part of the side wall of the cab on this side being indicated by a broken line only; Figure 2 is a plan view of the driver's cab with the roof area of the cab omitted and the fascia, provided in the windscreen area, indicated in outline only; Figure 3 is a front view of the cab in which the front of the cab at the level of the windscreen and fascia is not shown: and Figure 4 is a side elevation of the other side of the cab shown in the previous figures, corresponding to Figure 1.
In the drawings the reference 1 indicates the driver's cab of a lorry of the forward control construction type which is provided below the windscreen 2 with a fascia 3 which accommodates the instruments of the instrument panel and is covered in a manner which is not shown here in detail.
The driver's seat 4 and co-driver's seat 5 are disposed in the cab 1 in the usual way and the steering wheel 6 and the pedals (not shown) are mounted in front of the driver's seat 4.
Between the driver's seat 4 and the codriver's seat 5 and arranged above the engine is a cooker-sink combination 7 comprising a sink 8 and a cooking plate, or cooker 9 situated in front of it in the direction of travel. Figure 1 shows that there is associated with the sink 8 and the cooker 9 a common cover 10 formed by a hinged cover which can be swung round the forward -in the travelling direction - upner edge of the cooker-sink combina tion 7 and rests on the fascia 3 when in the open position. As a result a tray 11, provided on the top relative to the closed position of the cover 10, comes into an underneath position, in fact in the area between the pivot axis of the cover 10 and the fascia. To prevent objects from falling out of the tray 11 the tray may be capable of being covered in some suitable manner - not shown here in detail for example by a pulled over roller-blind or a clip-on cover. In its open position the upper side of the cover is in one plane with the cooker-sink combination thereby forming a working surface which extends almost as far as the windscreen 2 of the cab and thus provides favourable working conditions. As a result of its being supported on the fascia the cover 10 is supported firmly in its open position also and is thus also unaffected by heavy loadings.
In front of the cooker-sink combination 7 and projecting under the fascia 3 is a box 12 the top of which is situated level with the lower side of the cupboard of the cooker-sink combination 7 and which, adjacent to the cooker-sink combination is in the form of a bottle holder 13. In front of this the box has a deeper area which is designed as a compartment 14 for example for emergency equipment, which can be covered by a cover in the form of a hinged flap 15 the pivot axis 16 of which is located next to the bottle holder 13 and the width of which corresponds to the width of the bottle holder so that it can be laid flat on the latter.
Provided in the forward end - in the travelling direction - of the cupboard containing the cooker-sink combination is a further compartment 17 which lies substantially below the cooker 9 and which can be closed off by way of a hinged flap 18 provided at the front thereof.
In this arrangement the axis of the hinged flap 18 lies approximately level with the upper side of the box 12 so that the hinged flap 18 can be laid down on the latter. The compartment 17 is particularly suitable for accommodating a large capri city fire extinguisher.
Situated behind the compartment 17 in the travelling direction and thus substantially below the sink 8 is a drawer 19 which can be pulled out towards the co-driver's side and which acts for example as a cupboard for cold food.
Running transversely to the cooker-sink combination 7 and extending approximately over the width of the rear of the driver's cab adjoining the cooker-sink combination is a cupboard unit 20 which comprises located side by side, a water supply tank 21 contained in a cupboard 22, a cupboard 24 which holds a safe 23, a cupboard 25 constructed as a refrigerator box, and finally a cupboard section 27 containing a clothes chest 26. The clothes chest 26 is constructed as a trunk-like upper part, constituting overall a cover for a lower part 28 which becomes accessible when the clothes chest 26 is tipped up. Here the lower part 28 is used in particular to hold tools and spare parts and, with the cupboard section 27 positioned as a whole substantially behind the driver's seat 4, it has in its laterally outer area a compartment 29 which can be used to accommodate a cylinder for compressed cooking gas 30 and a hydraulic jack 31. Because the compartment 29 may be so constructed as to project further downwards, bulky items such as this can be accommodated even below the clothes chest 26.
As in the case of the cooker-sink combination, hinged cover flaps are also provided for the cupboards of the cupboard unit 20, their pivot axes being offset a little forward relative to the rear edge of the cupboard unit 20 so that in their rear areas the cupboards remain covered upwardly even when the covers are open.
Accordingly the clothes chest 26, which as a whole is like a trunk and preferably can be closed in a dust-tight manner and, viewed as a whole, constitutes the pivotable cover for the lower part 28, but does not occupy the full depth of the cupboard unit 20, as can be seen from Figure 1.
The provision for utilising the top of the cupboard unit as a base for a bed 32 in its sleeping position (solid lines in Figure 1) opens up the possibility of a transport position for the bed 32 in which this is disposed substantially upright and inclined slightly forwards in relation to the rear wall 33 of the driver's cab, engaging at the top end in a gap 34 between the rear wall 33 and atop cupboard 36 fitted at a distance in front of this on the roof 35 of the cab, and extending, in this example of construction, over the width of the cab.
This method of disposing the bed removes the need for elaborate fixing arrangements for it to a very large extent and allows it to be stowed quickly and compactly, even when the bed is relatively wide. This considerable width of bed, which is very desirable with long-distance travel, causes it to overlap the cooker-sink combination 7 to a certain extent when in the reclining position of the bed 32, as shown in Figure 1, but in this position it is limited in the distance through which it can shift forward by the tray 11.
It is further possible to utilise the cooker-sink combination as the base for a second bed which is arranged obliquely relative to the cupboard holding the water tanks, to which the foot end of the bed disposed on the cupboard unit is assigned.
Thus it becomes possible to provide two beds which are placed at an angle to one another and which effectively share a common foot end. The second bed, the head end of which is adjacent to the windscreen, thus is also of sufficient length in such a combined arrangement which can be carried ou with little extra expenditure. The second bed preferably consists of a number of biscuit-type cushions and additional support can be provided in the transitional space between the cookersink combination and the cupboard holding the water tanks.
Adjacent to the laterally outer side of the cupboard unit 20 in the area behind the driver's seat 4 where the cupboard unit is at some distance from the side wall of the cab, there is suspended a clothes bag 37, as can be seen particularly well in Fugyres 2 and 3.
Figures 3 and 4 show particularly well also that the cupboard 22, which in this case accommodates four water tanks 21, is provided, below the water tanks, with a drawer 38 which can be pulled out in the travelling direction and which is placed at a lower level than the drawer 19 of the cooker-sink combination which pulls out transversely to it, so that when open these drawers overlap.
The water tanks 21 are housed in an insulated manner inside the cupboard 22 and each is provided at the top with a closable opening 40 in which a submersible pump is suspended so that they can be filled and emptied in succession and independently of one another. Here it is preferable if the submersible pump is connected in direct dependence upon the swivelling position of the swivel arm 1 associated with the sink 8, so that when the swivel arm is upright the pump is switched on and is switched off when the swivel arm is swung into the sink 8 about its horizontal swivelling axis (shown by a broken line).
The upper cupboard 36 is placed with its front edge substantially in the same vertical transverse plane as the front edge of the cupboard unit 20 and, like the cupboard unit 20, is subdivided into a plurality of juxtaposed partitions which can be closed off by separate, downwardly swinging covers.
With the top cupboard 36 arranged in this way its front lies substantially adjacent to the rear of a skylight opening on which, in the construction shown here, there is mounted an air-conditioning plant which is held at the side by the over-roof 42, fitted over the roof 35 of the driver's cab, at a distance above the roof 35, and extending into a sun visor 42' at the front.
If no air-conditioning plant is provided it is possible, with this arrangement of the skylight opening -- not shown here - for the latter to act as a direct extractor for the cab and for fumes produced during cooking on the cooker 9 situated below it.
In conjunction with the air-conditioning plant which is shown, it has been found convenient if at least one of the vents associated with the cab fascia (not shown) forms a fume extractor and suction can be conveniently effected by way of the blower associated with the vent, its direction of rotation being reversed by a change of polarity.
In conjunction with the arrangement of the fittings according to the invention it is furthermore possible to provide a soiled linen bag 43 or the like in the area in front of the co-driver's seat below the fascia.
Furthermore, to facilitate operations and increase accessibility, with the construction shown in the drawing which can be seen particularly well from Figure 4, the codriver's seat can be pivoted about its axis 44 on the floor of the cab into a forward position in which the front legs 45 of the seat frame act as the floor support and the seat part of the co-driver's seat 46 is almost upright and substantially next to the fascia. By swinging the back 47 of the co-driver's seat 5 from its normal position as in Figure 2 backwards through about 90 degrees this can be brought into a substantially horizontal position thus providing a convenient seat for work at the cooker and sink and at the same time providing access to the cupboards.
Besides the swivel position shown in Figure 4 at the back of the seat can also be swung forwardly into a position in which, as shown by the broken line in Figure 4, it lies substantially parallel to the seat part 46 thus substantially freeing the space previously occupied by the codriver's seat.
