Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN ARMATURE ASSEMBLIES FOR SOLENOI1)-OPERATED VALVES (71) We, GIRLING LIMITED, a British Company of Kings Road, Tyseley, Birmingham 11, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to an armature assembly for a solenoid-operated valve, the armature assembly being of the kind comprising a body in which is located an armature coil for controlling the position of a fluid-flow control valve member with respect to a seating.
Known solenoid-operated valves incorporating armature assemblies of this kind are generally unsuitable for use in vehicle braking systems unless they are first modified by the addition of fluid tight seals.
For example, in one construction in which a core-piece is coupled to a valve-operating member through a lost-motion connection, a bush through which the valve-operating member works is sealingly connected to the core-piece, and a plug for closing the open outer end of the bore in the armature in which the core-piece is guided is provided with a seal for sealing engagement within the bore. In another construction a sealing ring is located between a housing of the armature and the actual body of the valve itself.
According to our invention in an armature assembly of the kind set forth the body is provided with an open-ended recess, and a pair of terminals and the armature coil are located in the recess, each terminal being insulated from the body, externally accessible at one end and in contact at the opposite end with one end of the coil, each terminal also being so constructed and arranged that it is retained in the body, a potting compound filling the remaining space in the recess, the potting compound retaining the coil and providing additional retention of the terminals.
The potting compound, which may be any suitable electrically insulating material, acts as a housing for the coil, at the same time completely sealing the coil within the body, thereby avoiding the necessity for providing additional seals or other sealed connections.
The potting compound may comprise any suitable synthetic plastics material, for example of an epoxy resin type.
The initial retention of the terminals facilitates the construction of the armature assembly, in which the terminals and coil are located in the body and the remaining space is then fflled with the potting compound.
In such a method the potting compound also maintains the ends of the coil in contact with both terminals.
Conveniently the terminals are in the form of electrically conductive metal blades which project from the body through openings in the closed end of the recess and which extend axially of the recess being enclosed within an insulative covering which insulates the blades from the body.
Each terminal may have cranked portions which by which it is retained in position in the body against spaced shoulders.
One embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the body of an armature assembly; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an inverted plan; and Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through a solenoid-operated valve assembly incorporating the body of Figures 1 to 3.
The solenoid-operated valve illustrated in the drawings comprises a diecast body 1 of sintered iron having an axial bore 2 which is counterbored at one end to form a union 3. An annular recess 4 is provided in the face of the body remote from the union 3 and diametral notches 5 are provided in the body 1 at the open-end of the recess 4. A pair of diametral openings 6 aligned axially with the notches 5 are provided in the closed end of the recess, tangential to the outer wall of the recess 4.
A pair of diametrically opposed terminals each comprising a flat metal strip 8 enclosed within an insulating covering 9 extend axially of the recess. The inner ends of the strips are cranked outwardly at 10 to extend into the notches 5 and portions of the covering 9 are removed to expose the faces of the cranked portions 10 which are remote from the axially innermost ends of the notches 5. The opposite ends of the strips 8 project outwardly through the openings 6 and are cranked outwardly at 11 in a position such that each strip is retained in position by the cranked portions 10 and 11 which urge the covering into engagement with opposed parallel faces 12 and 13 comprising the end face of the body 1 which is adjacent to the union 3 and the axially innermost end of the notch 5 into which that cranked portion 10 extends. The cranked portions 11 both lead into upstanding parallel terminal portions 14 adapted to be received in an electrical connector of the push-in socket type.
An armature coil 15 of annular outline is inserted into the recess 4 and each of the two ends 16 of the wire of the coil is connected to one of the cranked portions 10.
The space in the recess 4 surrounding the coil and the terminals is finally filled with a potting compound 17, suitably an epoxy resin, which retains the coil 15 and the terminals in position in the body 1 and also provides a fluid-tight seal between these components.
In one embodiment the end of the body 1 remote from the union 3 is clamped in sealing engagement against a complementary face 18 of a housing 19, and a valve member 20 housed in a recess 21 in the face 18 is alternatively engageable with a pair of valve seating 22 and 23 located respectively in the body 1 at the inner end of the bore 2, and at the inner end of an axial bore 24 in the housing 19.
A spring 25 acts on the valve member 20 normally to urge it into engagement with the seating 23 to permit the bore 2 to communicate with an eccentrically arranged passage 26 in the housing 19, through ports 27 in the valve member.
When the armature coil 15 is energised the valve member 20 is urged into engagement with the seating 22 against the folce of the spring 25 to cut-off communication through the bore 2 and place the passages 24 and 26 in- communication.
Our solenoid-operated valve is designed for use in braking systems where the fluid pressure medium which it controls comprises air.
