Compiling and tabulating statistics mechanically.-In machines for sorting perforated statistical record-cards, more particularly of the type described in Specification 128,207, the means for actuating the deflectors are operated electrically by means of solenoids controlled by the analyzer. The analyzer comprises two rollers, one of which is provided with a series of contacts connected to the solenoids and the other is provided with plungers adapted to make contact through the perforations in the cards with the contacts on the first roller. The cards are fed from a magazine by a reciprocating picker block and are conveyed by rollers between the shafts 54, 65, which are mounted on levers pressed together by springs and carry radially-disposed stop pins 76, Fig. 2, for adjusting the position of the cards. The shaft 54 is hollow and is provided with insulating-sleeves 56, 77, Fig. 4. In the sleeve 56 are embedded longitudinal contact bars 57, which are connected by conductors 79 to contact rings 78 on the sleeve 77. The shaft 65 is provided with a key 66 and carries a roller 67, Fig. 3, which is adapted to register any column of the perforations and carries spring controlled pins or plungers 71 held in position by a ring 69. Brushes 81 make contact with the rings 78 and each is in circuit with a wire 89 of a solenoid 168 which is mounted on a thimble 164 on a bracket 162 attached to the bracket 132 of the shaft of the timing cam disc 136. The other end of the solenoid wire is connected to a source of current 177 and the other wire 178 therefrom is grounded. When the solenoid is energized by the completion of the circuit through the contacts 57, 71 its armature 169 is projected into the path of the projection 140 on one of the tripping cams 138 which is thereby set to operative position. The sclenoids are arranged helically around the timing shaft in order that the corresponding deflector 100 may be raised at the instant the card reaches it. The deflectors are operated and the analyzed cards are conveyed to the appropriate compartment as described in the above-mentioned Specification.
