Abstract

Such a system has an adjustable delivery pump element (1), which delivers the fuel to an injection nozzle (6), and is designed for favourable fuel consumption and good smoke behaviour in the upper load range. In order to improve the unfavourable conditions prevailing in the lower load range, that is high fuel consumption and poor exhaust emission quality, the pump element (1) is designed in such a way that in the lower load range and when the engine is idling, virtually the full injection pressure required at full load is available on the injection bore (7). In order to reduce the excessive delivery rates and delivery quantities thereby occurring in the upper load range, an overflow valve (11) is provided between the pump element (1) and the injection nozzle (6) in order by simple means to prevent a deterioration of the operating data in the upper load range. <IMAGE>
