Abstract

154,239. Gerrard, A. J. June 12, 1918. Twisting wires together; shearing-adjuncts.- A bundling-machine comprises the following means for twisting the ends of the tying-wire together and for severing the tie from a main supply of wire. The twisting-devices are mounted in a head 24, and consist of three rotatable members 25, 26, 27 with radial slots to take the ends of wire, the middle member 25 being rotated to twist the wire ends together, and the side members 26, 27 being then rotated to aline the slots and release the wire. The member 25 is rotated by means of a pinion 28, Fig. 4, gearing with a segment 29 on a shaft 30 operated by a hand-lever 31. The members 26, 27 are rotated by means of segmental pinions 33, Fig. 3, carried in a shaft 32 and operated by a link 35 and a swinging arm 36 having a cam slot 38 traversed by a roller carried on an arm 39 on the shaft 30. The free end of the wire is held between a pivoted jaw 40 and a fixed jaw 41, Fig. 5. The jaw is normally held open by a spring latch 52, Fig. 3, which is released by hand to allow the jaw to fall and clip the end of the wire. At the end of the operation, a spring- controlled rod 45 is moved rearwardly by an arm 47 on the shaft 30 engaging a pin 46 on the rod, and an inclined surface on the rod opens the jaw 40 and engages it with the latch 52. A wire cutter 42 on the opposite side of the head is actuated by another arm on the shaft 30. A wire strainer consisting of a lever with two opposed pawls is mounted on the frame to draw the wire taut. The material is placed on a table carried by a rod which is raised by a treadle lever to compress the bundle and held by a. ratchet and pawl. The pawl is released by an eccentric after tying is completed to permit removal of the bundle.
