1537085 Honing tools NAGEL MACHINENUND WERKZEUGFABRIK GmbH 13 Feb 1976 [14 Feb 1975] 05679/76 Heading B3D A honing tool comprises a tool body 12 on which honing bodies 25 are mounted and movable relative to the body by an expander body 32 which acts upon the honing bodies to effectively expand the tool when the expander body is rotated relative to the tool body. The upper end of the tool body is connectible to the spindle of a honing machine which also has an axially movable expanding mechanism connectible to the end 15 of a transmission shaft 16 located in a bore 17 of the tool body. A pin 18 on the shaft engages an inclined slot 19 in the tool body so that axial movement of the shaft is converted into a rotary movement which, by a tongue and slot connection 22, 23, is transmitted to the shaft 24 of the expander body 32. The shaft 24 and expander body 32 are held against axial movement and some other connection, such as a claw coupling, splines or slot guide, may replace the tongue and slot connection 22, 23. The tool body 12 has radial slots 27 in which the honing bodies are movable radially outwardly by rotation of the expander body 32 against the force of springs 31. Each honing body consists of grinding material 28 on a carrier 29 having a flat face 30 engageable by an edge 34 of the expander body which, in the case of a tool having four honing bodies, is of square crosssection, rotation of the expander body thus causing radially outward movement of the honing bodies. The expander body may be slightly larger at its outer end than its upper end when the honing tool is to be used for honing blind bores. In another embodiment, the honing tool has two honing bodies which are moved radially outwardly by an expander body in the form of a round rod having opposed flats engaging the honing bodies (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further embodiment, the honing tool has a pair of preliminary honing bodies 45, Fig. 6, and a pair of finish honing bodies 55, and the expander body 32b is rotatable in one direction from a neutral position so that edges 34b cause radially outward movement of the preliminary honing bodies 45 and in the opposite direction so that the edges 34b cause radially outward movement of the finish honing bodies 55. The other edges of the expander body are formed as curves 46 for supporting the retracted honing bodies not in operation. In a similar embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown) the expander body is in the form of a rectangular bar and the honing bodies which are not operative are supported by a cylindrical section fitted to the bar.
