Abstract

153,701. Smalley, E. L. Aug. 22, 1919. Resistance furnaces.-A removable heating-unit for a crucible or other furnace consists of a hollow muffle with longitudinal grooves on its exterior surface, and a preformed resistance grid of stout material, the parallel lengths of which are adapted to fit in the grooves. The muffle may be of circular, rectangular, or other section. As shown in Fig. 1, a grid :resistance 6 is mounted in grooves on a tubular muffle 5 arranged inside a housing 1, the bends of the grid being carried by notched supports 10, which may be moulded into the housing. The grid may be expanded by heat to facilitate fitting on the muffle. In a modification for use in a crucible furnace, the muffle is arranged vertically and has cylindrical collars extending at the ends. In another arrangement, Fig. 8, a rectangular muffle is formed in sections 19 the ends of which are recessed to receive the bends. The grid may lie over a part only of the muffle, and the lengths between the bends may be other than straight.
