Abstract
1536869 Wound sliver; blending fibres NV BEKAERT SA 16 Dec 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 51463/75 Heading D1F A spool package comprises a sliver substantially free of torsion and of size not exceeding 1000 Tex wound on a spool cone. Preferably the sliver is obtained by stretch breaking a multifilament bundle and spirally winding the sliver onto the spool cone in a plurality of layers having a crossing angle of 15 to 20‹ to the proceeding layer. Blending fibres. The sliver may be unwound from the spool at an angle of 90‹ to the spool cone, tension being maintained by a roller contacting the wound sliver, unwinding being facilitated by a knife which separates fibres hitched between wound and wound sliver and drafting the sliver together with a sliver comprising fibres of a lower modulus of elasticity. Roller and pin drafting is specified. The distance between the spool package and the entry into the drafting apparatus should be less than the average fibre length. The lack of torsion in the high modulus sliver allows the high modulus fibres to retract without crinkling at the end of the drafting operation and so facilitates blending. The high modulus fibres may be glass, stainless steel, carbon, boron or aromatic polyamide. Alternatively they may be conventional textile fibres and be blended with elastic low modulus fibres.
