Abstract

1535482 Video recording systems SONY CORP 17 Feb 1977 [1 March 1976] 06746/77 Heading H4F The system records and reproduces video signals in successive parallel tracks on a magnetic tape. There is no guard band between the tracks, and in order to reduce cross-talk the luminance signal is frequency modulated on a first carrier when one track is recorded and on a second carrier when the adjacent tracks are recorded. The carriers are selected to be in frequency interleaved relationship, and preferably differ by (m + ¢)f H , where m is is integral and f H is the horizontal sync. frequency. The change from the first to the second carrier and vice versa is achieved by changing a bias value which is added to the luminance signal. Timing marks are recorded along the tape to identify alternate tracks, and are used on reproduction to ensure correct phasing of the record/playback heads. The heads have different azimuth angles to reduce cross-talk further. The chrominance signal is down-converted, before being added to the frequency modulated luminance signal, so that it lies in a frequency band lower than that of the frequency modulated luminance signal. The carrier frequency of the converted chrominance signal is preferably 1/4f H (2m - 1). The phase of the carrier is constant during every other track and is inverted at line frequency during intervening tracks, effectively ensuring that the chrominance carriers in adjacent tracks are of different frequency and in interleaved relationship.
