Abstract

1534651 Marking hot metal HOOGOVENS IJMUIDEN BV 7 March 1977 [8 March 1976] 09556/77 Heading B6C A hot metal slab 2 is marked to indicate end faults 4 by scanning the slab to detect the fault and controlling the pneumatic application of marking material as a result of the detection. Powdered marking material may be blown on to the slab through a slot, or preferably a V-shaped aperture 11. In an apparatus for doing this, a marking head is mounted on the piston rod of a pneumatic piston and cylinder, and a pneumatic sensor 23 provided so that, when the marking head is moved towards the slab, the sensor detects the slab position and triggers marking and retraction of the piston rod so allowing the apparatus to cope with different slab sizes. The mark applied is for guidance of an operator to cut off the end faults.
