Abstract

1534181 Artificial leg with knee brake CHAS A BLATCHFORD & SONS Ltd 30 Aug 1977 [13 Sept 1976] 37774/76 Heading A5R An artificial leg comprises thigh and shin components 1, 2 connected by a knee mechanism comprising a brake drum 8 and shoe 9 which frictionally engage during leg loading to resist leg flexure. The drum shoe 9 includes a lining 10 and is pivoted to the shin component 2 at one end via pin 7 and at its other end via pins 12, 13 and connecting lever 11. The thigh and shin components are connected via pivot pins 5, 7 and connecting lever 6. During leg loading component 2 moves upwardly relative component 1 and causes lever 6 to rotate anticlockwise about pin 5 whereupon the drum shoe 9 expands against the brake drum 8 since rotation of the shoe 9 relative the component 2 is prevented by connection of the shoe to the pin 13. Compression spring 19, adjustable by screw 22, urges lever 6 clockwise to oppose the wearer's weight and release the braking effect at the correct stage in walking. The lever 6 may be in two axially adjustable parts to allow shoe wear to be accommodated.
