Abstract

1534016 Seals; change-speed gearing; bearings NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Jan 1977 [24 Oct 1975] 43845/75 Headings F2B F2D and F2A A two-part sealing ring 32 (Figs. 2 and 3) for a hydrostatic thrust bearing 17 formed between two relatively rotatable members 13, 14 is arranged with clearances 37, 40, 43 in an annular groove 30 on member 14 for controlling loss of pressure oil, from the hydrostatic thrust bearing 17, at a boundary between the members 13, 14, the surfaces of the ring 32 and/or groove 30 being contoured to provide flow restrictions across the clearances 37, 40, 43 and the ring 32 being provided with primary passageways 53 and secondary passageways 51 interconnecting the clearances such that the fluid pressure forces generated by the pressure oil of the hydrostatic thrust bearing 17 and acting on the sealing ring 32 are perfectly balanced (Fig. 3) to locate the ring 32 free of contact with the groove 30. The oil is supplied at 18 (Fig. 1) to the hydrostatic thrust bearing by a pump 19 and leakage from the sealing ring 32 (21 in Fig. 1) is collected by a channel 25 and returned to the pump 29 via a return duct 26 and sump 24, a second similar sealing ring 22 being arranged at the radially inner surface of the members 13, 14. Similar alternative embodiments and modifications are illustrated in Figs. 2a, 2b, 3a and 4a to 4c all not shown. In Fig. 6 (not shown) two such sealing ring arrangements (141, 142) are used at the inner and outer boundaries of a high pressure fed, hydrostatic bearing between a reaction member (117), on an input shaft (103), and the output member (116) of a steplessly variable ratio friction roller gear.
