Abstract
1532710 Radar; aerials OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY 21 June 1976 25734/76 Headings H4D and H4A Apparatus is described for transmitting a very short high voltage impulse via an antenna into the ground as a radar-type signal to be reflected by metallic or non-metallic objects, e.g. buried pipes, to detect position of same by the reflected signal, which is received by a separate antenna and processed in a receiver wherein it is converted to digital form and may be stored, recalled and operated on, for example successive echo signals may be subtracted from prior ones, to facilitate object detection. The digital output signal may be displayed on a 2 dimensional array of light emitting diodes. The antenna, which is embodied in two forms, essentially comprises a crossed pair of mutually insulated, orthogonally disposed, resistively loaded, folded dipoles, coupled to the earth through a suitable lossy dielectric material. One antenna unit is coupled to the signal processor and the other is separately connected to the transmitter impulse source 10 which comprises a capacitor charged by a radar modulator circuit coupled to a gas breakdown tube which discharges the pulse when the voltage on the capacitor reaches the breakdown voltage thereof. In the signal processor 18, the received signal is stored in a high speed sample and hold circuit and quantized in a D to A converter. Details of various modes of operation of the processor are given to allow detection of objects in differing ground conditions.
