Abstract

1531984 Air filter BONDINA Ltd 23 June 1977 [26 June 1976] 26697/76 Heading BIT [Also in Divisions Dl and D2] An air filter e.g. for use in a coal mine, comprises a non-woven fabric which has areas impregnated with sufficient of a coloured electrically conducting impregnant, e.g. graphite, to render those areas electrically conducting and which also has differently coloured non-electrically conducting areas. The areas may be island areas or stripes. The conductive areas dissipate static charge. The differently coloured non-conducting areas are preferably white or some other pale colour, so that clogging, e.g. with coal dust, can be monitored. The filter is preferably made by applying the impregnant to an absorbent continuous surface, e.g. a felt-covered roller, squeezing the impregnant out of areas of the absorbent surface by pressing a profiled roller against the absorbent surface, and then passing the non-woven fabric to be impregnated between the absorbent surface and a second profiled roller, the profile of the second roller being such that the squeezed areas on the absorbent surface are in register with the recessed areas of the second roller. In the example a 50/50 viscose/polyvinyl chloride fibre blend which had been carded, crosslaid and then lightly needled was impregnated in stripes using the profiled rollers, with an aqueous dispersion of graphite in water. The impregnated fabric was then sprayed with a mixed acrylate/polyvinylidene chloride dispersion as a bonding agent. The resulting air filter material is sewed into a bag which is then stretched over a wire cage.
