Abstract

1531317 Permanent magnets; magnetization BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 22 July 1976 [24 July 1975] 30672/76 Heading H1P A permanent magnet is manufactured from a mixture of a powdered magnetizable substance of high magnetic crystal anisotropy with a binding medium and charging the mixture into a press comprising a mould cylinder 2 and pneumatically operated dies 1, 3. Die 1 is constructed as an ultrasonic resonator excited from generator 6 and the cylinder 2 is surrounded by magnetizing coil 7. The mixture is precompressed by die 1 with magnetization and the resultant tablet is raised to the upper edge of the mould by die 3; after which it is compressed under die 1 with application of magnetization and of ultrasonic vibrations to produce local heating by absorption of oscillatory energy. After cooling the magnet is removed from the mould by actuating die 3. The magnetizable substance may be a cobalt rare earth or alnico alloy, and the binding medium may be thermoplastic or thermosetting. In the case of the former the mould is held below the softening temperature and in the case of the latter it is held above the setting temperature. The medium may be, e.g., polyphenyl sulphide, polyamide, polyethylene, polyester or low melting point metals e.g. tin or Wood metal. The magnetic powder may be tin-coated to assist in binding.
