Abstract

1531203 Electrostatic filtration of liquids PETROLITE CORP 10 June 1977 24336/77 Heading B2J [Also in Division C5] An organic liquid (fat, animal oil, or vegetable oil) which has been partially refined and hydrogenated, and mixed with a finely dispersed solid adsorbent to remove colouration, and which therefore has entrained both the solid adsorbent and finely divided hydrogenation catalyst, is purified by passing it in an oxygen-free atmosphere through an electrostatic filter 14, to remove the solid particles from the liquid. The filter 14 comprises a bed 44 of particulate solids in which are disposed electrodes 46, 47 to provide a high intensity D.C. electric field, so that the liquid-borne particles adhere to the bed material, which may be crushed flint or other mineral.
