Abstract
1530141 Displacement monitor NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 11 March 1976 [12 March 1975] 10209/75 Headings G1M and G1N A displacement monitor has a frangible detector element 22, which is a glass strip with a conductive coating 36, bridging the gap between two heavy metal plates 38, 40 with pegs 42 which engage the ends of the strip when the plates are moved apart to cause it to fracture at a predetermined relative displacement of the structures in which pins 50, 52 are secured. Pin 50 locates the plate 40 at a reference position of one of the structures. The other pin 52 provides a lost motion linkage with slot 48 to the plate 38. The amount of lost motion is pre-set by means of nuts 62 on screwthreaded rods 58 carrying a stop 54. A notch 34 provides a consistent starting point for cracking of the plate under tension. As a result point 78 rises in potential and a voltage-responsive device 76 operates an indicator or alarm. A failure in the circuit prior to cracking of the element is signalled by extinguishing of the lamp 80. Several monitors may be connected in a series circuit from a station 70 with a Zener diode having a different characteristic across each element whereby the foiled element may be identified from the volt drop. Resistors of different values may replace the diodes.
