Abstract

1530021 Producing aqueous polymer dispersions BASF AG 23 Feb 1976 [24 Feb 1975] 06984/76 Headings C3B C3L and C3R Aqueous polymer dispersions of 20-75 wt. per cent strength are produced by (a) preparing an organic solvent solution of a polymeric binder containing carboxyl groups and having an acid number of 5-150, the organic solvent being either a water-immiscible solvent or a mixture of water-miscible and water-immiscible solvents, (b) neutralizing part or all of the carboxyl groups with ammonia or an amine, (c) dispersing the organic solution in water (which may contain the neutralizing agent) in the absence of a dispersing agent, and (d) removing the organic solvent(s) virtually completely by azeotropic distillation. A cross-linking agent for the binder may also be present. In examples, (1) a methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate/ hydroxypropyl acrylate/styrene/acrylic acid copolymer dissolved in xylene is neutralized with dimethylethanolamine, the solution is dispersed in water and the dispersion distilled to remove a xylene/water azeotrope, and the resulting aqueous dispersion is mixed with TiO 2 and an etherified melamine/formaldehyde resin; (2) the aqueous dispersion is produced as in (1) except that the original xylene solution also contains an isophoronediisocyanate/caprolactam adduct; and (3) similar to (2) but instead of said adduct there is used an epoxy resin based on bisphenol A and the polymer does not contain hydroxypropyl acrylate units.
