Abstract

1529824 Automatic control of current and power GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 24 Oct 1975 43788/75 Heading G3R [Also in Division H2] A circuit for regulating the current supplied to a discharge lamp 63 comprises a transistor 66, a current sensing resistor 67 and an energy storing inductance 70. Initially a capacitor 75 is charged from a D.C. supply 64, 65 via a high value resistor 76 until a silicon bilateral switch 78 breaks down causing transistors 79, 124 and 66 to conduct. Current is supplied to the lamp via the inductance 70 which is constituted by the primary winding of a transformer having a secondary winding 71 which quickly charges the capacitor 75 to maintain the conduction of the transistor 66. When the current sensed by the resistor 67 reaches a predetermined level, a transistor 80 conducts thereby switching off the transistors 79, 124 and 66. The inductor 70 then discharges through the lamp until the current sensed by a resistor 74 falls to a predetermined low level whereupon the transistor 80 is switched off and the transistor 66 is switched on again. In a modified circuit shown in Fig. 6, a constant wattage is supplied to the lamp. A signal representing the lamp voltage is supplied to an input 96 of an operational amplifier 92 and when this voltage exceeds a predetermined level a signal is supplied to the input 101 of an operational amplifier 99. The input 100 of the amplifier 99 is connected to a current sensing resistor 19 and the amplifier 99 adds the signals on the inputs 100, 101 to provide a signal to a comparator 105. Of the lamp voltage increases, the comparator 105 reduces the conduction of the transistor 18 so that the lamp power remains constant.
