In communication apparatus, any of a plurality of resident's units can send a primary call signal to a transponder-indicator unit which actuates indicator means to identify the source, actuates reassurance indicator means at the resident's unit and sends a secondary call signal to an appropriate guardians' unit (police, fire brigade &c.). In Fig. 2, if any manual switch EC in house A, for example, is opened, then over line 15b a relay ESR/A in the transponder-indicator unit drops out, lighting reassurance lamps RL in house A via line 15c, and in the transponder-indicator unit, lighting lamp ILA to identify the house and actuating an emergency automatic telephone machine EATM to send a signal (e.g. pre-recorded verbal message) via external telephone lines (and perhaps a telephone exchange) to the appropriate guardians' unit. Fire sensing (temperature or smoke) devices in house A, when actuated, open switches at FSR which via line 15d drops out a relay FSR/A in the transponderindicator unit, and this drops out relay ESR/A with the same results as before and gives an audible alarm S in house A and actuates a telephone device FATM to send out a 999 call and pre-recorded message. A battery B with mains float charger CH is provided. Testing switches ETSI-2 and FTS1-3 are provided for ILA, ILB and RL, S respectively. A primary call signal can also be given in response to a floor activity switch if it is allowed to time out say 24 hours since last being reset by being trodden on, or in response to a low-temperature sensor switch. The signal over the telephone lines may specify the house, but this is not necessary in view of lamps ILA, ILB.
