Abstract

1528272 Fuelling reactors UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 2 Dec 1976 [7 Jan 1976] 00460/76 Heading G6C A nuclear reactor of the kind comprising a reactor core submerged in a pool of liquid coolant contained by a primary vessel, e.g. a liquid metal cooled fast breeder reactor, is provided with an inclined shoot 13 for guiding a bucket 17 containing a fuel element assembly in to and out of the primary vessel and a shock absorber 16 at the foot of the shoot 13 for arresting a falling bucket. A vertical shaft 18 displaceable along its longitudinal axis has a horizontally pivoted hooked link 19 adapted to engage a radial projection 21 on the bucket 17 when in an inclined position and, by upward displacement of the shaft 18, to pivot the bucket 17 about its base into a vertical position (as shown in broken outline). A carrier 14 slidable along the shoot 13 under the control of a cable 15 carries the bucket 17. The carrier 14 is open at its uppermost side to enable the bucket 17 to be raised from its inclined position. To facilitate pivoting of the bucket 17 about its base, the base and the abutting surface of the carrier 14 are of complementary part-spherical shape and the pivot P is displaced from the axis of the shaft 18 so that the bucket 17 tends to fall into the carrier 14, the hooked link 19 merely controlling the fall of the bucket. In a particular embodiment, the shoot 13 is of rectangular section and carries a pair of square section carriers 14 each housing a bucket 17. A fuelling machine withdraws a spent fuel element assembly from the core and deposits it in one of the buckets 17 when vertically positioned, then engages a new fuel element assembly disposed within a second bucket 17 alongside the first and transfers it to a vacant position in the core. A second inclined shoot (not shown) complementary to the first, enables spent fuel element assemblies to be transferred to a coolant- containing storage chamber located within the concrete vault structure of the reactor.
