Abstract

1528160 Silicon nitride based components NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 3 Aug 1976 [8 Aug 1975] 33198/75 Heading C7D A Si 3 N 4 based internal combustion engine component comprises a low thermal conductivity body with at least one adherent region of a higher thermal conductivity. The component may be made by forming a low density Si preform as by powder metallurgy or flame spraying then coating with a higher density Si layer by powder metallurgy or flame spraying and then nitriding to form a Si 3 N 4 body with a density up to 2À2 mg/m<SP>3</SP> and a Si 3 N 4 layer with a density # 2À6 mg/m<SP>3</SP>. Alternattively the nitriding may be effected separately, or the body may be preformed Si 3 N 4 . Powder metallurgy techniques used may be slip casting, injection moulding and isostatic compaction and the layer of higher thermal conductivity may be other than Si or Si 3 N 4 e.g. SiC. The Si 3 N 4 body may also be impregnated with a higher thermal conductivity material.
