Abstract

1527293 Transistor amplifiers K GARWELL 21 April 1977 [23 April 1976] 16467/76 Heading H3T The efficiency of a class A transistor amplifier TR1 is increased by providing a second transistor TR2 as collector load together with a switching- diode D connected between the transistors. With a negative going input signal the rising collector voltage of TR1 blocks diode D2 and current flows into the load ZL through transistor TR2. With a positive going input signal, TR2 turns off and current flows from load ZL through D and TRI. Since the output current does not flow through resistor R, this resistor can be larger than if it forms the whole collector load and less power is wasted. A detailed circuit of an audio amplifier incorporating the invention is described, Fig. 5 (not shown).
