Abstract

1527224 Reciprocating pumps; pressurized dispensing containers METAL BOX Ltd 17 Sept 1975 [17 Oct 1974] 45527/74 Headings F1A and F1R In a container-mounted, spray pump or a valve for a pressurized dispensing container, a plunger 1 is movable by finger pressure into a chamber 2 against a spring 7 and has an O-ring 16 slidably mounted so as to cover discharge ports 15 during the return stroke for entry of product into chamber 2 beneath the plunger, and to uncover ports 15 during the discharge stroke for discharge of product via plunger passage 14 to nozzle 13, a sleeve 17, being slidably mounted on plunger 1 and engaged by circlip 19 on plunger 1 to positively locate O-ring 16 in its closed position. The pump has a container venting port 23 which is closed in the uppermost position of the plunger. Inlet valve 5 may be a ball, as shown, or a poppet, Fig. 2 (not shown). An aerosol container valve for dispensing measured quantities, Fig. 3 (not shown), has a groove 26 and port 27 connecting the dip tube (9) to chamber 2, port (27) being open to chamber 2 in the uppermost position of the plunger to permit filling of the chamber 2 with product, and being isolated from chamber 2 by the O-ring seal during the discharge movement, so that only the chamber contents are discharged. An aerosol container valve for dispensing product and propellant in separate streams from a spray button, Fig. 4 (not shown), has a groove 29 and port 30 connecting the gas space of the container to the chamber 2 beneath the plunger O-ring, and a groove (26) and port (27) connecting the dip tube to a space (33) above the plunger O-ring. A side port (32) in the plunger controlled by a resilient disc (25) connects space (33) to an annular discharge passage (31 and 35) in the button when the plunger is depressed, the plunger O-ring opening an axial passage (15 and 14) in the plunger leading to a passage (34) in the button, the gas and product paths being reversed when the container is inverted.
