Abstract

1526857 Filter PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN NV 22 July 1976 [25 July 1975] 30599/76 Heading BID [Also in Division F1] A pump, particularly for a washing machine, comprises a mushroom-shaped baffle 28 located in a chamber 3 which is separated from the pumping chamber 2 by a wall 4 provided with an opening 5 coaxial with the impeller 7, a suction pipe 20 and a discharge pipe 8 which are tangential or radial to the respective chambers being provided. The disc-like head 30 of the baffle 28 is of greater diameter than the opening 5 and its clearances from the chamber 3 and the wall 4 are such that it prevents the passage of solid objects which would be too large to pass through the discharge pipe 8, such objects being retained in the chamber 3 until an inspection cover 22 is removed. The shank 29 of the baffle 28 is fastened to the cover 22 or, as shown, the baffle is moulded integrally with a disc-like portion 24 of the core. The cover 22 comprises another disc-like portion 23, the two portions being squeezed together by a screw 25 to cause a gasket 27, as of soft rubber, to be expanded radially into sealing engagement with the wall of the chamber 3. The surface 31 of the baffle head 30 is formed in crosssection from a straight portion 31a and a quadrant 31b, while the opposite surface 32 is parallel in cross-section to the portion 31a. This facilitates a vortex-free flow of water. The chambers 2, 3 may be coaxial as shown or out of alignment, and may be of volate form instead of being cylindrical. As shown the pump may be of the type in which the impeller 7 is located to one side of the chamber 2 whereby it generates a vortex in the chamber which facilitates the expulsion through the discharge pipe 8 of small objects which are permitted to pass by the baffle 28. The impeller blades 33 project axially beyond the bounding plane Z of the impeller disc. An end cover 12 carrying a shaft seal 19 is clamped against a seal ring 14 by screws 15 and a disc 18, the latter also supporting the driving motor 11.
