Abstract

1526788 Lubricants EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 26 Sept 1975 [17 Oct 1974] 39522/75 Heading C5F A lubricating composition comprises a major amount of a lubricating oil and minor amounts of two additives. The first additive is a copolymer of ethylene and an alpha-olefine of three to 18 carbon atoms or a terpolymer of ethylene, alpha-olefine and a non-conjugated diolefine of five to 12 carbon atoms, and may be modified by oxidation by air or diluted air and amination of the oxidized material; it improves viscosity index. The second additive is an alkyl ester or ester-amide derived from a copolymer of an anhydride or imide of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid and an alpha-olefine of eight to 24 carbon atoms, the alkyl group is of six to 18 carbon atoms, and the number average molecular weight is in the range 1000 to 30,000; it may lower the pour point or disperse sludge or both.
