Abstract

1526777 Optic fibres PILKINGTON BROS Ltd 1 Dec 1976 [12 Nov 1975] 46726/75 Heading G2J [Also in Division B5] A fibre, e.g. a glass optical fibre, or bundle of glass optical fibres, 11a, Fig. 1 is provided with an extruded enveloping plastics sheath 6, which preferably envelopes the fibre(s) at a clearance by feeding the fibre into the sheath 11 issuing from an annular extruder die head outlet 6 and drawing the sheath with the fibre through a fluid cooling bath, the feeding of the fibre being effected through a guide tube 12 of the die head, through which air or silicone fluid is continuously fed from a location or locations 18 along its length, so that at least part of the fluid flows in the direction opposite to fibre movement to remove dust and particles adhering to the fibre at the entry 24 to the guide tube, and part of the fluid may also flow in the direction of fibre movement to act as a barrier preventing abrasion of the fibre against the guide tube, and preventing ingress of the extruding plastics to the guide tube or the base of the mandril 1 in which it is located. The process may provide a sheathed single fibre with a clearance from the sheath of 0.1 to 2 times the fibre diameter, and the sheath may comprise polyvinylchloride, polyimides, polycarbonates, polyethersulphones, silicone rubbers, or other synthetic rubbers. Various constructions of guide tube are described (see Division B4-5). The sheathing may be effected, Fig. 7, on a fibre 11a supplied continuously by drawing from a rod 42 in a heated furnace 43, by means of a capstan 44 and accumulator 45. Alternatively the fibre may be supplied from a drum driven at an adjustable speed, Fig. 6 (not shown) and a guide, and the sheathed fibre may be drawn from the die under freely rotatable rollers in a cooling bath, by a constant tractive force exerted by a capstan from which the fibre passes to a spool at a tension controlled by a unit located between the capstan and spool.
