Abstract
1525608 Fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Oct 1975 [11 Nov 1974] 41025/75 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel element has a composite cladding of a substrate having on the inside surface a metal layer consisting of copper, nickel, iron or an alloy thereof, with less than 1% by weight, preferably less than 1,000 parts per million, impurities. The metal layer of the composite cladding prevents perforations or failures in the cladding substrate from stress corrosion cracking or from fuel pellet-cladding interaction. The substrate of the composite cladding is either zirconium or a zirconium alloy. Methods of manufacturing the composite cladding include electroplating the metal layer on the substrate, followed optionally by heating the substrate and metal layer to produce diffusion and a metallurgical bond between them; electroplating the metal layer on the substrate and tube reducing the composite to produce a metallurgical bond between the substrate and the metal layer; bonding an insert tube comprised of one of the above metals to a billet of the substrate material, and extruding the composite followed by tube reduction so that a metallurgical bond is established between the metal layer and the substrate; and inserting a close fitting liner of one of the above metals into a billet of the substrate material followed by tube reduction of the assembly, with intermediate anneals if needed, to produce a metallurgical bond between the metal layer and the substrate.
