Abstract

1524034 Measuring current SIEMENS AG 21 Aug 1975 [5 Sept 1974] 34699/75 Heading G1U Current, for example in a high potential line, is measured by an arrangement in which (1) two coherent plane polarized beams of light from two mirrors 11, 12 are amplitude modulated 110, 120, in quadrature, i.e. their intensities I c and I 2 respectively are given by- and (2) the planes of polarization of the two beams are then each rotated 111, 121, by 45 degrees but in opposite directions, (3) the resulting beams are both passed through a Faraday rotator, 130, to a winding 131 on which the current to be measured is passed, thus rotating the planes of polarization of the two beams by an angle #, say, (4) the two beams are resolved 132 into two perpendicular directions of polarization parallel to the two directions which the two beams had before entering the rotator, (5) the emerging beams are converted 1101, 1201, into electric signals and differenced, 1110, and (6) the phase of the resulting difference signal is determined 1111, this phase being a measure of the current to be measured.
