Abstract

1523811 Suspension bridges W C BROWN 21 Jan 1977 [28 Jan 1976] 03369/76 Heading E1G Wind-induced oscillation of a suspension bridge deck 10 about its longitudinal axis is reduced by forming the deck as an array of transverse beams 11 supporting longitudinal slats 13 of steel or concrete parallel to the suspension cables, the slats 13 permitting upward flow of air through or between them. The slats 13 may be rectangular or of curved or trapezium shape (as shown) to leave upwardly-convergent air flow slots 14 of, say 6 inches width. As shown the slats adjacent the bridge centre line are wider to provide traffic lanes 15. The air passages between slats may, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), be inclined from the vertical towards the bridge centre.
