Abstract

1523590 Device for picking up floating oil BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 3 Dec 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 53089/74 Addition to 1419114 Heading B1D A device for picking up oil floating on water comprises a circular array of polyvinyl chloride discs 1 mounted on shafts 2, connected together by universal joints 4 and rotated by one or more motors 5 as the device floats on the water (Fig. 2, not shown) with discs one quarter immersed. The discs are preferentially wetted by oil which is removed by fixed rubber or plastics blades (7) and delivered to central bowl 8, from which it is pumped via outlet 9. Motors 5 may be hydraulic or pneumatic, powered from a diesel engine. As shown pneumatic motors 5 receive air from peripheral pipe 10 which also acts as a guard rail. The device is supported by a float chamber (12) beneath bowl 8, and means (not shown) may be provided to maintain the immersion of discs constant as oil is picked up, e.g. by varying the air-water interface level in an open float chamber.
