Abstract

1522610 Light guides BRITISH STEEL CORP 21 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974] 45460/74 Heading G2J A light guide for location in a furnace wall 16, 18, which must be flexible (because of deformation of the wall due to thermal stresses) but for which optic fibres cannot be used (because of the high temperatures) comprises a number of rigid transmissive elements (e.g. spheres 24 or cylinders with hemispherical ends), Fig. 3 (not shown), in contact or closely adjacent inside an open-ended tube 28. The elements may be made of quartz or sapphire. The inner-most part of the guide comprises a probe made of sapphire or quartz rods terminating in a small sphere 24a.
