Abstract
1521960 Rotary positive-displacement fluid-machines G S WILSON 1 Oct 1975 [3 July 1974] 14700/74 Heading F1F In an I.C. engine generally similar to that described in Specification 1289479 with two pivotally inter-connected pairs of pistons 3, 4, Figs. 6 and 7, the latter are kept in sealing engagement with the inner peripheral wall 1 of the casing 19 by mechanism 20 comprising a crank member, or eccentric, 21 driven by a planet gear-wheel 26 meshing with a fixed sun gear-wheel 28, which is co-axial with the output shaft 5, the gear-wheel 26 being mounted on a flywheel 50 secured to said shaft. A lever 190 pivotally attached to the flywheel at 194 is pivotally connected at 192 to a connecting rod 22 engaging with the member 21 and at 66 to a coupling member 333, which is fixed to one of the pistons. A similar mechanism is connected to the diametrically opposite side of the group of pistons and another pair of such mechanisms is provided on the axially opposite side of the pistons, Figs. 8 and 13 (not shown). Lubricant passageways 195, 215, 225 extend through the connecting rod, lever, crank member. Radial and axial seals 60, 80, 84 are provided in the pistons. The aforementioned pair of mechanisms may be modified so that the connecting rods are inter-connected by a linkage system of the pantograph type, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lever of each mechanism is pivotally attached at one end to the flywheel, at the other end to the respective piston, and in the middle to the connecting rod. In a simpler form the connecting rods are pivotally connected directly to the corresponding pistons, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively, each of at least two of the pivotal connections 6 between the pistons is connected to a respective mechanism 10, Fig. 1, comprising a crank member 11 connected to the shaft 5 by epicyclic gearing, Fig. 2 (not shown), so as to revolve at three times the speed of said shaft, a connecting rod 12, and a "slider" 14 in a slideway 15, secured to the shaft. A pivotal connection 13 between the connecting-rod and slider is not coupled with the adjacent connection 6. The engine may be adapted to operate as a compressor, pump, or motor, which may be hydraulic or pneumatic.
