Abstract

1521022 Photo-electric weighing apparatus PITNEY BOWES Inc 1 Feb 1977 [5 Feb 1976] 04087/77 Heading G1A Weighing apparatus suitable for weighing envelopes comprises an envelope tray 22 supported by leaf-springs 28, 30 and carrying on its underside a first grating 54, which because of the spring arrangement moves substantially vertically, with minimal lateral displacement, when a letter is placed on the tray. Movement of the grating is sensed by a photo-electric apparatus carried on a U-shaped support 36, which is fixed to the mounting frame (32) of the apparatus. Light from source 64 is directed through the grating 54 and via a second grating 46 whose lines are angled with respect to three of grating 54, to a pair or linear array of photo-cells 72. The sleeve 50 mounting grating 54 is axially and angularly adjustable. Angular adjustment of the disc 76 mounting the photo-cells is also possible so as to match the spacing of the MoirÚ fringes which are formed as vertical bands by the two gratings. The horizontal grating lines of 54 extend substantially further than the maximum extend of the photo-cell array, so as to allow for any sideways movement of the grating 54.
