Abstract
1520922 Vacuum switches GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 12 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 33516/75 Heading H1N In a vacuum switch comprising two rectilinearly movable co-operating contacts 17, 18, supported by respective rods 17a, 18a, passing through respective conducting end caps 12, 13 closing the ends of the evacuated insulating. envelope 11 of the switch, each contact 17, 18, is surrounded by and electrically connected to an annular shielding electrode 30, 32 positioned so that when the contacts are closed they meet on a plane 42 midway between the two shielding electrodes, but on opening the contacts are withdrawn past their shielding electrodes so that in their fully open position the shielding electrodes lie between the contacts to shield them. The shielding electrodes 30, 32 are supported by respective cylindrical supports 35, 35a coaxially surrounding the contact rods 17a, 18a, and themselves supported from the end caps by dome-shaped supports 37, 37a which also serve as shields for the seals 14 where the end caps 12, 13 are sealed to the insulating envelope 11. The contacts are made of beryllium or a beryllium alloy and the shielding electrodes are made of a ferrous material such as stainless steel.
