Abstract

1520489 Lubricants INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE and RHONE-POULENC INDUSTRIES 2 Dec 1975 [3 Dec 1974] 49450/75 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating compositions comprise a lubricating oil and 0À1-10 wt. per cent of a modified polybutadiene obtained by (a) hydrogenating 70-99% of the recurring unsaturated groups of a polybutadiene having 25-80% 1,2 units, (b) epoxidizing at least the greater part of residual unsaturated groups, the degree of epoxidation being such that less than 5% of the recurring groups remain unsaturated, and optionally (c) reacting the epoxy groups with an active hydrogen compound, e.g. water, an alcohol, a phenol, a thiophenol, an amine as a monocarboxylic acid. The oil may be a hydro-refined or solvent-refined hydrocarbon oil or a synthetic oil, e.g. a polyester or polyether. Conventional additives may be included. In examples, a hydro-refined lubricating oil is blended with, or has produced in situ therein, an epoxidized hydrogenated polybutadiene or a further derivative thereof obtained by reacting the epoxy groups with N,N-diamethyl-1,3-propane diamine, #-naphthylamine, stearic acid or 1-octanol.
