Abstract

1519489 Regenerating ion-exchangers CLARKE CHAPMAN Ltd 9 Sept 1976 [16 Sept 1975] 37931/75 Heading B1J A method of regenerating ion exchange material in a vessel comprises passing liquid upwardly through the material and out of the vessel through outlet means and maintaining sufficient gas pressure in the vessel above the level of the liquid to maintain the level of the liquid sufficiently below the free surface of the material to suppress fluidisation of the material, gas being introduced into the vessel during regeneration only in response to rise in the liquid level above a datum which lies above the level of the outlet means, the introduction of gas increasing said gas pressure, and terminating the supply of gas after a period, the period being either predetermined, or being that period necessary for the liquid level to. reach the datum, gas pressure above that needed to hold the liquid level at the datum being relieved only partly and only when the liquid level falls to the outlet means and being relieved by flow of gas from the vessel through the outlet means only. When introducing gas for a predetermined period, this may be repeated until the required liquid level is attained. In a modification, gas introduction is stopped when the liquid level falls to a lower datum level also above the outlet means. The means for sensing liquid level may be responsive to change in the electrical conductivity of the layer of material on rise or fall of liquid level thereto. The layer of material above the outlet means can be inert.
