Abstract

1518846 Rejuvenation of electrolysis membranes HOOKER CHEMICALS & PLASTICS CORP 1 Oct 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 40153/75 Heading C7B An ion-exchange membrane which has been used to define part of the anode compartment of an NaCl electrolysis cell is rejuvenated by treatment with acid at pH 0À2 to 2À5 and below the working electrolyte pH to remove deposits from its anodic side. The membrane may be a cation selective fluoropolymer e.g. a laminated membrane with different cation-selective activity on each side, or having an SO 3 H gradient across its thickness. Treatment may be in situ in which case normal electrolysis is modified by acidifying the anolyte, reducing the current density, and diluting the NaOH on the cathodic side. If the membrane is removed from the cell it may first be treated in a glycerol/brine solution to prevent shrinkage. The deposits removed are Ca, Mg and possibly Fe oxides, hydroxides, chlorides and complexes and should also be removed from the cell base by flushing. Entrained deposits are either filtered out or, if dissolved, chemically precipitated. Treatment acids include HCI, H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , citric, gluconic and mixtures.
