Abstract

1518453 Flame resistant plaster board SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 4 Feb 1976 [5 Feb 1975] 04397/76 Heading D1P A flame resistant plaster board comprises a layer of plaster sandwiched between paper sheets containing at least one "alkali compound" i.e. a hydroxide or salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. Preferably the sheets comprise 1-30% of MOH, M 3 CO 3 ,. RM, R'M 2 , R'HM, M'(OH) 2 , R 2 M', R'M' or mixtures thereof, wherein M is sodium or potassium, M' is calcium, magnesium or strontium, R is a C 1 -C 3 carboxylic acid residue and R' is a C 3 -C 4 dibasic carboxylic acid residue. The exemplified organic acid residues are formic, acetic, oxalic and succinic. A mixture of sodium and calcium formate is preferred. A 10 to 30% aqueous solution or slurry of the alkali compound is sprayed or brushed onto the plaster board. Alternatively the paper sheets are dipped into the solution or slurry and a slurry of alpha or beta form plaster hemihydrate is moulded between the paper sheets. Polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose, dextrin or a synthetic resin may be added to the plaster to improve its adhesion to the paper. The sheets or the board may be treated with a 0.5% aqueous -solution of ethanol, ammonia or a surfactant e.g. R'O-(CH 2 CH 2 O) n POOAOB wherein R' is alkyl or aralkyl, A and B are each independently hydrogen or R'O-(CH 2 CH 2 O) n - and n is I to 30 to improvethe penetration of the alkali compound. The alkali compound is then applied, followed by a 3% aqueous emulsion of paraffin wax, petroleum resin or silicon resin. Alternatively the three components are applied from a single medium.
