Abstract

1518399 Opto-electric couplers INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP 30 Nov 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 49822/76 Heading G1A An opto-electronic coupler has a light source and detector in a housing which is provided with an electrically conductive surface to divert the electrostatic field between the source and detector, and to prevent the passage of free carriers through the housing from the source to the detector. In Fig. 2 an LED source 7 is mounted in the upper part 2 of the housing, and a pair of photovoltaic cells 8 are mounted in the lower part. The parts are assembled on to a conductive plate 10 by locating lugs which fit holes 10a, 10b. The lug which fits 10b is formed by a connecting pin 6, which is used to earth the plate 10 and one end of the detectors to a printed circuit board (not shown). The plate 10 creates an air-gap between the two parts of the housing, and also prevents the passage of free carriers through the housing; a transparent sealing material covers the detectors, and in conjunction with the air-gap and the earthed plate this reduces the electrostatic field.
