Abstract

1516689 Boron nitride ELEKTROSCHMELZWERK KEMPTEN GmbH 9 Dec 1975 [30 Dec 1974] 50418/75 Heading C1A Boron nitride is made by reacting an alkali metal boride or alkaline earth metal boride with nitrogen, at a temperature of 900 to 3000‹C, in the presence of an auxiliary substance selected from carbon, boron carbide, boric acid, boron trioxide, iron, iron oxides, and carbonates, borates, hydroxides and oxides of alkali metals and of alkaline earth metals. Hexaborides and dodecaborides are preferred, especially calcium hexaboride, and the reaction may be effected at at least 1400‹C, or, using elevated pressure, at 900 to 1000‹C. Examples relate to the use of lithium dodecaboride, magnesium boride, and calcium boride, with carbon and boric acid or boron trioxide as auxiliaries.
