Abstract

1515592 Picking up oil from water PETROCLEARANCE Ltd 11 March 1976 [2 May 1975] 09681/76 Heading BID An oil spill recovery vessel comprises two hulls 10, 12 having buoyancy tanks 36, 40, 44 and storage chambers 38, 42, valves (48) (Fig. 2 not shown) located in the bottoms of the storage chambers, two cylindrical drums 52, 54 two internal combustion engines 68, 70 driving hydraulic pumps 72 which supply fluid to respective hydraulic motors 74 which motors are coupled to respective axles 60, 62 of the drums 52, 54 and which motors are arranged to rotate the drums in opposite directions as indicated by the arrows R (Fig. 4), hydraulic drive controls 76, 78, scrapers for removing oil from the cylindrical surfaces of the drums, and ducting 84 for conveying the oil to openings 92 formed in the top of each of the storage chambers 38, 42. The gap between the rollers may be adjusted by means of feed screws (66) (Fig. 2) acting on bearing blacks 60 which support the axle 56 of drum 52. In use the vessel may be towed or pushed by tugs T (Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 not shown) to the site of an oil spill with the storage chambers 38, 42 empty and the valves (48) closed so that the draft of the vessel corresponds to the water level indicated by the line L (Fig. 4) and so that the drums 52, 54 are clear of the water. The valves 48 are then opened allowing water to enter the storage chambers to increase the draft of the vessel so that it corresponds to the water level indicated by the line W. Oil and water is picked up by the rotating drums as the vessel is towed over the spill and is delivered to the storage chambers 38, 42 where the oil floats to the surface and displaces water from the storage chambers through the valves 48. A grating 94 prevents the admission of debris to the tanks 38 and 42 and hatches 46 are provided to afford access to each of the buoyancy tanks and storage chambers. Floating booms B (Fig. 6) may be used to connect the tugs to the oil spill recovery vessel so that the oil spill is urged between the hulls 10, 12 as the vessel is towed.
