Abstract

1513152 Prevention of reactor fouling during polymerization BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 21 Aug 1975 [8 Aug 1974] 34991/74 Heading C3P Fouling of the wall of a polymerization reactor during polymerizations in which the polymerization mixture moves with respect to the wall, is prevented by adding particles to the polymerization mixture and removing them from the polymer produced. The particles, which may be ceramic (e.g. porous pot, or a synthetic alumino silicate) abrade the reator wall as the polymerization mix moves, and thus remove scale as it is formed. The particles are preferably present in an amount of 0À1 to 1À0 wt. per cent, based on the total weight of the reaction mixture. The process is especially applicable to the aqueous suspension polymerization of vinyl halides. The particles may be removed by filtration screening, or sedimentation.
