Abstract
1512504 Boring earth etc. HUGHES TOOL CO 10 Feb 1977 5551/77 Heading E1F A roller cutter earth boring bit has a sealed lubrication system including a pressure relief valve 33 for discharging lubricant responsive to thermally induced expansion of the lubricant. A seal 87 is mounted on the bearing shaft 59 and is capable of slight displacement in groove 79. The lubricant is degassed and the lubrication passages and spaces in the bit are evacuated before the lubricant is injected into the bit. As described the lubricant pressure, at any particular depth in a borehole, caused by thermal expansion due to the geothermal gradient in the borehole, is always greater than the hydrostatic pressure at that depth, and the difference between the lubricant pressure and hydrostatic pressure is limited by the pressure relief valve 33.
