Abstract
1512494 Bending thin glass LIBBEY-OWENSFORD CO 10 June 1976 [23 June 1975] 24134/76 Heading C1M A thin glass sheet S is heated in a furnace to soften it, conveyed horizontally between press members 30, 31 and bent to a desired curvature, and then conveyed to a tempering device, excessive heat loss (and consequent poor tempering) being prevented by applying supplemental heat to at least selected portions of the sheet while advancing the sheet between the press members, the supplemental heat supply being interrupted immediately before the press members are actuated. The upper press member 30 comprises an outline mould 42, and lower press 31 comprises a broken outline mould 60. Gas burners 70 provide the supplemental heating, these being actuated (e.g. by photoelectric detector) when the sheet begins to enter between the press members, and the heating being terminated when the sheet contacts stops 37 and the presses are actuated. Preferably, supplemental heat is applied only to the upper surface of the sheet.
