Abstract

1512405 Beam scanning device BOFORS AB 23 May 1975 22950/75 Heading G2J [Also in Division F3] A device for scanning an optical beam through a sector in a substantially fixed plane (eg for missile tracking applications) comprises a source of a narrow beam 10, a disc 1 having planar but non- parallel sides 2, 3, and a reflector 12 having two reflecting surfaces 12a, 12b at right angles and intersecting at an edge (either notional or real) 12c. The disc rotates about axis 6 and as shown in the crosssection of Fig. 1 the emergent beam is always substantially parallel to the axis 6 (due to the retroflective properties of the reflector 12 in conjunction with the very small difference in optical thickness of the disc 1 for beams 11, 11'). When viewed in plan, however (Fig.2b) the reflector 12 behaves as a plane mirror and the beam 11' is deflected according to the rotational position of the disc 1. As shown in Fig.3 (not shown) two beams may be caused to scan in mutually perpendicular directions by suitable arrangement of the respective source and reflector for each beam relative to the disc. A single source may be beam-split to provide two scanning beams which are recombined on a common optic axis as shown in Fig.4 (not shown).
