Abstract

1511297 Applying predetermined tensions to bolts ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 1 Oct 1976 [3 Nov 1975] 45640/75 Heading F2H In a method and apparatus for tensioning a hollow bolt 1 using a piston and cylinder unit 6 attached to one end of the bolt, a pump unit 13 supplying pressure fluid to the cylinder 14 to cause the piston 9 to urge a push-rod 7 extending through the bolt against a reaction surface at the other end of the bolt, the pushrod 7 and a load-spreading member 11 between the piston 9 and the push-rod 7 are of harder material than the bolt 1 and the piston 9, and a shim 20 of softer metal is interposed between the rod 7 and the load-spreading member 11. A second shim 24 may be interposed between the piston 9 and the load-spreading member 11. The rod 7 and member 11 may be of tungsten carbide steel, and the shim(s) of mild steel with a thickness between 0À0001 and 0À1 inch, preferably 0À008 inch. The apparatus is as described in Specification 1,511,298.
