Abstract

1510826 Heat exchange apparatus INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO 22 May 1975 [22 May 1974] 22323/75 Heading F4S [Also in Division B7] A cooling assembly comprises an annular radiator 16 having radially extending cooling air passages therethrough, an axial-flow fan 28 and a shroud 38. The shroud is so shaped that, when the fan is rotated in one sense, air which passes axially through the shroud is directed (at least in part) radially outwards of the shroud towards the interior face of the annular radiator. The shroud has a cylindrical throat section 40, Fig. 3, an annular radially extending flat flange section 44 and an annular intermediate section 42. Optionally, the shroud supports a bell-mouth entrance 66. The fan blades 28 extend axially from a first plane, which is substantially coincident with one end of the cylindrical throat section 40, to a second plane which is substantially coincident with the plane containing the juncture of the intermediate section 42 and the radial flat flange section 44. For the shroud and fan blades RF=AW/3, CF=AW/3 and R= 2AW/3 where RF is the radial length of the radial flat flange section, CF is the axial length of the cylindrical throat section and R (see Fig. 3) is the radius of curvature of the intermediate section. Fig. 6 shows a modification where the cooling air is drawn through the annular radiator 16 and the shroud 38 is reversed in its location. An additional round heat exchanger 81 is provided. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, parts of the shroud's radially extending flange section are omitted, as illustrated in Fig. 7 (not shown), so that some of the air flows axially to a flat radiator 71. Barriers may be provided as at 73, Fig. 1, or in the region of the fan hub as at (68), Fig. 4 (not shown). The cooling assembly may be applied to any portable or stationary device. As shown in Fig. 1, the annular radiator 16 is in a truck and is for cooling of water from a water-cooled I.C. engine 10. Additional radiators, such as the radiator 71, may be provided for cooling of hydraulic fluid or of air-conditioning fluid employed in the vehicle. Instead of providing additional radiators, one radiator core may be divided into different sections each for the cooling of a different liquid.
